Types of minor scales
There are three types of minor scales;
- Natural minor scales
- Harmonic minor scales
- Melodic minor scales
Natural Minor Scale
The natural minor scale is also known as the Aeolian mode. It is constructed by lowering the third, sixth, and seventh scale degrees of the corresponding major scale. For example, the A natural minor scale is created by lowering the third, sixth, and seventh notes of the A major scale (A, B, C, D, E, F, G).
Harmonic Minor Scale
The harmonic minor scale is created by raising the seventh scale degree of the natural minor scale. For example, the A harmonic minor scale is created by raising the G to a G# (A, B, C, D, E, F, G#).
Melodic Minor Scale
The melodic minor scale is created by raising the sixth and seventh scale degrees of the natural minor scale when ascending, and then returning to the natural minor scale when descending. For example, the A melodic minor scale is created by raising the F and G to F# and G# respectively when ascending, and then returning to the A natural minor scale when descending (A, B, C, D, E, F#, G#, A).
